Development and administration of the Collaboration Platform for Forests (CPF)

The action regards to the development, maintenance, administration and continuous expansion of the Collaboration Platform for Forests (CPF), which will act as an information hub for the forest community and will enhance the sharing of knowledge and good practices among forest managers, research and policy makers. It will also serve as a tool for disseminating the results of the Natura 2000 Biogeographical Process in relation to forests in Greece.

The platform will provide access to forest management knowledge, documentation, events and news. It will also include tools for communication amongst members. Most of the content will be open to the general public. Members will be able to submit content and assign certain rights for its reuse by selecting the appropriate Creative Commons license.

Content update and upload will be under the supervision of an administrator, who will be a temporary civil servant of the Directorate General for the Development and Protection of Forests and Rural Environment. After the end of the project, the role of the platform’s administration will be assigned to a permanent civil servant of the DGDPFRE.

Development of tools for forest managers related to tourism and reduction of human disturbance

The action regards to the developent of an interactive application (App) named “ForestLife” for smartphones and tablets, which will be a modern and dynamic tool in the field of visitors management in forest areas of the Natura 2000 network of protected sites. The application will offer on site information to the visitors, while it will constitute a source of information of the general public about the values and functions of the forest ecosystems, with special focus on those within the Natura 2000 network.

Knowledge sharing through training

The action regards to the implementation of a training program addressing a series of topics relating to the Mediterranean Biogeographical seminars and targeting the personel of regional and local forest services, employees of management authorities of protected areas within the Natura 2000 network, municipalities, non-state forest managers and forest cooperatives. In total, eight training seminars are expected to take place within the following topics:

A) Management measures.

B) Adaptation of forest management to climate change.

C) Restoration and rehabilitation of degraded coppice oak forests.

D) Visitors management and creation of environmental interpretation infrastructure.

E) Innovative financing.

Monitoring of project impact

The action regards to the assessment of the project’s impact and will be implemented in three stages. The first involves the assessment of the baseline situation of the target groups and will be documented with a series of semi-structured interviews and focus groups. The second stage involves a midterm evaluation, which will enable the project team to optimize the actions as they are being developed. The evaluation will be carried out with the use of questionnaires distributed to the approximately 760 participants in the training seminars. In addition, a series of semi-structured interviews with the trainees will be conducted during the seminars. The third and final stage involves the assessment of quantitative data regarding the traffic of the Collaborative Platform for Forests and the number of downloads of the application ForestLife. Additionally, a number of semi-structured interviews will be conducted with stakeholders, addressing the way the project enhanced their capacity to exercise forest management.
