Easy access to bird data in Greece on the Website on Nature and Biodiversity of Greece

Factsheets and maps for 292 species of birds are available

In the context of its European obligations, Greece has completed the report on the progress of implementation of the Birds Directive (Directive 2009/147/EC) for the period 2008-2012. The report concerns species listed in Annex I of the Directive, as well as migratory birds not included in Annex I of the Directive but regularly occurring in the country. It covers the standard reference period extended by two years (until 2014).

The report was submitted to the Central Data Repository (CDR) of the European Environment Agency, at the link: http://cdr.eionet.europa.eu/gr/eu/art12/envv5hdfq/. However, information retrieval is difficult, especially for non-experts.

EKBY has processed and converted the data in an appropriate readable format (pdf files). Now, the data is easily accessible from the Web Site on Nature and Biodiversity of Greece (http://www.biodiversity-info.gr/index.php/el/national-reports/birds-dir-reports/art12-report-2008-2012).

The national report consists of two parts:

– General report: It includes description of progress, including key facts and web links from other sources for detailed information on e.g. legal transposition, research and work for the protection, management and use of bird populations.

– Bird species’ status and trends report (Factsheets and maps): It includes factsheets of birds of Community interest occurring in Greece and geospatial data/distribution and range maps of birds reproducing in the country. It is noted that geospatial data (and consequently the produced maps) of species that are classified as “sensitive” because of their vulnerability are not accessible to the general public.

The National Report on Article 12 of Directive 2009/147 / EC (2008-2012) was prepared as part of the project “Horizontal technical and scientific coordination of surveys and assessment of the conservation status of species and habitat types in Greece and synthesis of the results” and was based on the results of study 9 “Surveillance and assessment of the conservation status of bird species in Greece”, which was implemented in parallel. The Ministry of Environment and Energy was the contracting authority whereas the Management Service was the Biodiversity, Soil & Waste Management Division, Biodiversity and Protected Areas Department. The project was funded by the Operational Program “Environment & Sustainable Development” 2007-2013.
